Developments at Shedfield House Estate
The Estate has been active over the last 10 years in restoring and converting old farm buildings at two sites into attractive units for businesses with excellent IT infrastructure. The latest two developments are detailed below:-
Development of Colliers Orchard into two workshops
The latest development is the building of two workshops on a new site at the start of Sandy Lane. These replace an old garage workshop with two modern workshops with external oak cladding to give a high quality finish. The building has underfloor heating and is linked into the 100Mbps fibre network across the Estate which enables all businesses to have access to the uncontended
fibre network. Like all the business sites across the Estate, the workshops take maximum advantage of the old orchards which surround the site. The Bramley apple trees help create an attractive working environment but with access to advanced IT infrastructure.
Advanced business IT infrastructure based around 100Mbps uncontended fibre network
Shedfield House Estate is able to offer all businesses based on the Estate access to a 100Mbps uncontended fibre network which runs from both business centres on the Estate over BT ducts to Newnet’s ISP centre at Cams Hall in Fareham. The network has been in successful operation for over two years. The network will also include the workshops at Colliers Orchard.
The partnership with Newnet (http://www.newnet.co.uk/) has enabled all firms based on the Estate to be given a 1Mbs link to the network as part of their standard office/workshop rental package and at no extra cost. This link also opens up a range of managed IP services which can be accessed from Newnet including voice over IP, video conferencing to the desktop and managed data support among many other services.
Although a 1Mbps link may not sound much, because it is an un-contended service, it is equivalent to much higher speeds over standard broadband services. For example the Estate office has now switched out its traditional two line phone system and moved to a multiple line VoIP system managed by Newnet which is also run on the 1Mbps link as well as running standard broadband services including email and web browsing. A considerable saving is being made by this move alongside a more sophisticated phone operation integrated with Outlook as well as a much faster broadband service than before.
For those businesses with more active broadband requirements, they can access additional un-contended capacity from the Estate network directly from Newnet at very competitive prices. One of the businesses on the Estate, for example, has taken a 10Mbps un-contended feed for its work in CCTV software and services. An additional service which Newnet are introducing on the network is bandwidth flexibility. For example, this can allow businesses which have high peak requirements at specific points to add extra capacity for a short period of time such as backing up data intensive applications overnight or for high quality video conferencing.
