Conferences hosted by Shedfield House Estate

To date, three successful conferences have been sponsored by the Estate. These events provide an opportunity to bring together academics, local politicians and rural businesses from the Estate and Meon Valley to discuss medium to long term issues relevant to rural enterprise.

The latest conference was on the theme of Growth Issues for Small to Medium Business Enterprises, held in September 2008. Speakers included:

Carmen Evans, Pan's Lodge - on introducing a new range of exclusively designed own label fabric and border collections to a successful interior design business.

Chloe Carey, HR Handover - Managing the rapid growth of a successful HR outsourcing and consultancy business.

Liz Leffman, Clothesource - Importance to growing businesses of finding the right suppliers, with particular reference to offshore sourcing. (Liz is also the Liberal Democrat Prospective MP for the new Meon Valley constituency. ) The catering was provided by: ACE Catering, based at Shedfield House Dairy on the Estate.

The second event sponsored by the Estate was held at the Marriott Meon Valley in May 2007, this time the theme was internet and broadband. Speakers included:

Dr Nicholas Gibbins, Department of Electronics and Computer Science at the University of Southampton nmg@ecs.soton.ac.uk Nick spoke on the semantic web and implications for business in the years ahead.

Glenn Peacey, eHampshire, glenn.peacey@ehampshire.org explained the rollout by BT of higher broadband services for the rural economy of south Hampshire.

Huw Edwards, Director and founder of iCode, a business based on the Estate for over 5 years. Huw talked about the growth of iCode where over 40% of revenue now comes from its CCTV motion capture software downloaded over the web and used by customers worldwide. He highlighted techniques used to monitor web traffic and develop internet marketing campaigns.

Roger Huxstep, a local councillor representing the area on Winchester City Council, spoke on the enterprise services available from the Council and the strong support for developing the rural economy.
